Using A Countertop Water Filter Or Other Systems To Ensure Water Quality

By Esme Spence

A countertop water filter could offer comfort to those who dwell in areas with consistently poor water quality or those who are particularly sensitive to water contaminants. However, some people fret about whether their water filter actually does what it is supposed to do. In the past, some filters actually made water worse or did not change it at all, but various modern systems like countertop water filtration systems or Pristine water purification have shown clear improvement in water quality. Whether your system works depends on the system type, the situation, and following instructions.

We will look at some of the reasons water filters could be a good idea, even if you usually have fine quality tap water. Then, we will talk about how countertop filtration systems work. Finally, we will look into current analysis of countertop water filter systems.

In the United States, the water quality in almost all areas of the country is reliable. Usually, the incidence of waterborne illness in U.S. drinking water is very low. But, as recently as the 1990s, American metropolitan areas experienced outbreaks of waterborne illnesses. Cities such as Washington, Milwaukee, Las Vegas, and New York have had serious issues. Natural disasters (like the recent hurricane Sandy) can create flooding or other problems that damage water supplies and that detrimentally impact drinking water. Viruses, bacteria, and protozoa can cause waterborne illnesses. They can lead to a range of symptoms such as fevers and diarrhea. Use of water filtration systems like Pristine water purification can go quite a ways to stop such waterborne illnesses, even in emergencies.

There are various kinds of filtration systems that a countertop water filter could use. Carbon filters are often used with smaller quantities of water. They are able to remove bad odors or tastes, as well as contaminants like heavy metals, parasites, and pesticides. Reverse osmosis systems pull impurities from the water to provide healthy drinking water. The majority of contaminants like parasites or heavy metals can be removed with reverse osmosis systems. UV filtration systems are perfect for removing bacteria or parasites by exposing water to ultraviolet radiation. For other contaminant types, however, UV filtration systems may need assistance from other kinds of filtration.

Most tap water in America is just fine, but for those with weak immune systems, pregnant women, seniors, or children there can be an added need to assure water safety. Now there are industry standards for filtration that you can use as a signal for quality filters. A good system should be labeled with at least NSF/ANSI standard 53 according to the Natural Resources Defense Council. Depending on the age, brand, and whether instructions are followed, systems could or could not work well. Study up before picking a filter, as you may end up with a bum filter that could do more harm than good.

Clean water is a recognized human right, and having a quality countertop water filter system or using Pristine water purification products could be the way people can get this right.
