Are You Accidentally Sabotaging Your Diet?

By Patrick Lauderdale

Everybody knows that the best foods we can eat are whole grains, lean meats in addition to healthy fats. These ingredients load us with protein and energy. They help our bodies stay balanced without infusing a bunch of calories that we have to work extra hard to burn off at the gym. Did you already know, though, that a number of the foods you are eating that are supposed to be perfectly fine by dietary standards, could be keeping you from losing weight at a good pace? They may be preventing you from dropping pounds altogether! Here are a few of the foods which may be undermining your diet efforts.

You aren't really helped by Sports Drinks. You have most likely been told that your sports drink is the fastest way to replenish your body's electrolyte levels after a workout. Most medical doctors concur, however, that if your workout is shorter than ninety minutes, drinking water should be fine. Sports drinks are packed with sugar and calories and a large amount of other things you don't need such as artificial flavors and colors which defeat any attempts at eating only natural products. Try drinking some chocolate milk as an alternative. The sugar in chocolate may help your muscles start to mend themselves plus the calcium in the milk will strengthen your bones.

You do not need protein shakes. So many people think that consuming a protein shake is a good way to stop cravings when it isn't meal time. The truth is that when you are already eating a balanced diet all the protein shake really does is overburden your system with protein. Converse to typical belief, protein is not stored as muscle tissue fiber, it is stored as fat. If you've already had your daily allotment of protein that day, your body will just store the extra in your fat cells for later and that won't allow you to drop pounds or inches.

Pre-packaged deli meat isn't nearly as good for you as you might believe that it is. It's commonly thought that a sandwich constructed of whole grain bread along with lean pre-packaged deli meat is a pretty good lunch time item. The truth is that pre-packaged deli meat is packed full of preservatives along with about a third of your advised daily sodium intake. This will probably be especially dangerous if you are at risk of contracting heart disease. Instead of selecting deli meat, pick home grilled chicken or other poultry or fresh deli meat that you can get sliced at the deli counter. Yes you are going to shell out more money for these selections but you will be healthier if you choose them.

There are plenty of things that we imagine are better than others like choosing a whole wheat bagel each morning when the truth is that a bowl of cinnamon sprinkled oatmeal is a much healthier choice. Ask your physician exactly what the best means for you to eat healthfully are and then follow those directions. If you are mindful about what exactly you eat and treat your body well, losing weight should not be that big of an issue for you!
