What Sober Living Asheville Includes

By Billie Mays

The concept of sober living Asheville has taken many forms. One such form is drug and alcohol free housing. This housing is available to outpatient participants in rehab programs. These group homes offer a safe place to build a firm footing for those who wish to remain sober. It has been shown that living in a home where there is no support for staying clean is a main cause of relapse.

Of the approximately thirty group homes offering a drug and alcohol free living space none of them offer any kind of treatment. The house does offer an atmosphere of common goals and support from the other residents when things get rough. Drug and alcohol free facilities are self supporting and are not eligible for public support. House rules may include attendance at alcohol anonymous meetings and some sort of outpatient treatment.

Half way houses offer counseling and treatment and the resident can stay for thirty, sixty or ninety days. Medical insurance will sometimes cover the bulk of the cost for these programs. They also include food, transportation to and from AA meetings or doctor's appointments and advice for alternative living practices.

Learning how to function in life and society is a very important element of treatment for alcoholic/addicts. They have a very chaotic life style and sometimes need to be retaught the basics of day to day living. They are not good at following routines and making the bed or going to work each day is not normal for them. They are taught to become productive members of society.

Many people include holistic healing as a part of their recovery. Holistic healing includes all aspects of the person who is being treated. They combine the treatment of physical addiction with social and mental aspects of life. When used along with the more commonly accepted practices this concept is useful for a lot of people.

One of the things commonly found upon returning home from a half way house is that the friends that you drank with will avoid you. They are not comfortable with the new person you may have become. Counselors will tell you that this is caused by a feeling that you are judging them for their drinking habits or because they may have to look at their own behaviors in a new light. The returning addict or alcoholic is not the same person who left the group three months previously.

To stay with the program after you return home you will have to make many changes. You must adhere to the adage of "keep doing what you're doing; keep getting what you're getting". You will need to find new activities, new hobbies, new friends and new places to go. Movies, volunteering, classes or reading can be a means to a drug and alcohol free life.

There are many ways to take advantage of sober living Asheville. Programs offer complete packages of care on whatever level you are most comfortable with. Only those who cannot be honest with themselves and choose not to accept change in their lives will fail. If you are willing to make changes in your life you can and will be successful in your quest for sobriety.
